Rachael Thompson is a photographer whose work is driven by a lifelong passion for documenting and understanding the truth of our lived experiences.

Following a 15-year career as a journalist, writer and editor, Thompson reconnected with photography more than a decade ago to delve deeper into the craft of capturing intangible moments that tell the stories of who we are and how we live. She plunged head-first into commercial photography and shooting for film and TV productions around southern California, using her early foundations in photojournalism and portrait photography to refine the instincts and choices that propel her distinct style today.

Thompson’s art lies at the intersection of these life experiences, which both inform her work and make her stand out from the crowd. Whether she’s shooting an album cover or an intimate portrait, Thompson strives to capture the essence of who you are.

When she’s not shooting for clients or making fine art prints, Thompson creates multimedia works and immersive experiences that build new narratives aimed at challenging the status quo. Her serial photo essays “Warrior Woman” and “HYSTERIA” feature Thompson’s efforts to define a new visual and linguistic system for how women are represented in media.

In 2021, she founded Stolen Butter to amplify the voices of fellow artists and bring their art into the world in creative ways that pierce public consciousness.

Thompson lives in Los Angeles with her husband and daughter. She earned her bachelor’s in Journalism from the University of South Florida and attended graduate school at the University of Miami. Her photographs have been published in the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, People, Hollywood Reporter, LA Yoga, Voyage LA, and on book covers, album covers, billboards, and posters.
